Why everything spirals

Survival mode, point by point

Filtration: long, then continuous. The “temperature ÷ 2” rule maxes out beyond ~28 °C: move to a much higher regime, and above ~30 °C water temperature the simplest and safest option is 24/7 filtration through the peak. The water needs to circulate while it’s under attack — which means all the time.

Tests: every day or every other day. In a heatwave, a week between two tests is an eternity: chlorine can go from fine to zero in two days. Thirty seconds of test-strip photo a day is the cheapest anti-tipping insurance on the market.

Sanitisation: monitored, not massive. The classic mistake is the panic overdose the day the water turns. The right strategy is the opposite: frequent, calculated corrections that keep the level within range continuously. If the pool tips over anyway (it happens), it’s a standard green-water rescue — a calculated shock, not a randomly multiplied one.

Limiting the temperature climb. You can’t easily cool a pool, but you can slow the rise: a shade sail through the scorching hours, extra night-time filtration (the water trades heat with the cooler air), jets or a waterfall at night to encourage evaporation. Every degree saved relaxes the whole equation.

And what about the swimmers?

Good news: well-monitored water in a heatwave stays perfectly swimmable — that’s the whole point. The usual comfort rules simply apply with extra care: shower before swimming (sunscreen is warm water’s enemy number one), re-test after the big days, and an eye on the app’s swim indicator if a treatment is under way.
