Milky pool water — whitish, opaque, like a veil of milk — signals suspended particles too fine for your filter. Three origins dominate: a mineral imbalance (pH and alkalinity too high in hard water, precipitating calcium carbonate), the aftermath of a shock treatment, or filtration that can’t keep up. The remedy always follows the same order: test, rebalance the chemistry, filter at length, and only then help the filter with a clarifier or flocculant. The exact corrections depend on your readings and your volume: that’s what the CliniPool app calculates.
The three classic scenarios
Scenario 1: hard water precipitating. In a hard-water region, a pH climbing above 7.6 and a high alkalinity are enough to turn dissolved calcium into white micro-crystals. The water goes milky, the walls turn rough, and the phenomenon feeds itself as long as the balance isn’t corrected. It’s the number one cause of persistent milky water.
Scenario 2: the post-shock. Just treated green water? The white is the normal sequel: it’s the dead algae. Continuous filtration removes them in a day or two; a clarifier speeds things up.
Scenario 3: filtration falling behind. Run time too short for the temperature, worn sand, a tired cartridge, or water moving through too fast: the fines slip back into the pool instead of being captured.
How to tell them apart? Test, don’t guess
Colour alone isn’t enough: you need the numbers. A full test (pH, alkalinity, hardness, sanitiser) points straight to the scenario: hardness and pH high → limescale; chemistry fine but water not clearing → filtration; chlorine very high after a treatment → post-shock.
The treatment, in order
1. Rebalance the pH first (and the alkalinity if it’s involved). As long as the water stays in “precipitating” mode, filtering achieves nothing: the limescale keeps forming. Corrector amounts depend on your volume and the measured gap — the app calculates them and guides you.
2. Filter at length. Continuously until the water clears, with filter cleans whenever the pressure climbs.
3. Help the filter if needed. Haze still there after 48 h? Clarifier (cartridge filter) or flocculant (sand filter) — never the other way round. The app checks compatibility with your setup.
4. Vacuum the floor after flocculation: the clumps that settled are vacuumed slowly, ideally straight to waste so they don’t reload the filter.
5. Re-test and keep watch. If limescale was the cause, keep an eye on the pH in the following weeks: it’s the guardian of the balance.

Why is my water milky after a shock?
