Water hardness (calcium): hard water and its pitfalls

Hardness — calcium hardness — measures the amount of calcium and magnesium dissolved in your water. It’s largely a matter of geography: depending on your region, the tap water filling the pool is very hard (calcareous) or very soft. And both extremes cause trouble. Water too hard: scale on the liner and equipment, water turning milky, deposits. Water too soft: “aggressive” water attacking seals, metal and certain liners to rebalance itself. Why hardness matters
Water dislikes imbalance: it always seeks a stable point, and calcium is a key player. Hard water oversaturated with calcium “releases” its excess as soon as conditions allow — a pH or alkalinity too high, a rise in temperature — and that calcium precipitates: scale on the waterline, rough deposits, persistent milky water. Conversely, soft water lacks calcium and goes hunting: it dissolves whatever it finds, attacking seals, metal parts and porous liners.
Hardness is therefore the parameter that decides whether your water scales or corrodes — two opposite problems, one underlying setting.
The hard-water-region trap
If you live on a limestone plateau, the scenario is familiar: crystal-clear water at the start of the season, then a recurring whitish veil in summer, a waterline that scales up. It’s not dirt — it’s your calcium precipitating, over and over, as soon as the pH climbs. The fix isn’t a clarifier on loop (that treats the symptom) but managing the balance: keeping the pH on the lower side of its range, the alkalinity in check, so the calcium stays dissolved. How to manage hardness
The honest bad news: you don’t bring hardness down with a simple addition. The realistic levers are dilution (renewing part of the water with softer top-up water, when you have it) and above all managing the balance (pH, alkalinity) which decides whether the calcium behaves or precipitates. On the too-soft side, you can instead raise the hardness with a calcium product to bring the water back into its comfort zone and stop the aggressiveness.
In both cases, the right reflex is to measure hardness a few times a season (it moves slowly, especially after big water top-ups) and to let the app adapt its targets and doses to your pool’s actual hardness.
