Water temperature isn’t a product you dose, and yet it may be the most influential parameter of your pool. It can’t be corrected — it multiplies everything else. The hotter the water, the faster the chlorine is consumed, the faster algae grow, the more the filtration has to run. Above ~28 °C, the balance tips into accelerated mode; above ~30 °C, it’s survival mode. Conversely, below ~12 °C, aquatic life slows to the point where you can winterise. The hidden multiplier

All water chemistry obeys a simple law: heat speeds up reactions. Concretely, every degree above 28 °C devours chlorine faster (accelerated reactions, intense UV, microorganism metabolism at full tilt) while supercharging algae, whose growth is keyed to temperature. Water at 32 °C consumes an amount of chlorine that bears no relation to the same water at 24 °C, and the slightest window of under-sanitisation gets exploited immediately.

It’s the great summer classic: the spotless pool that tips into green water in 48 hours during a heatwave, without anything having changed. Nothing had changed… except the temperature, which had changed everything for us.

What temperature governs

Filtration time. The base rule is crisp: water temperature ÷ 2 = hours of filtration per day (water at 24 °C → about 12 h). The hotter the water gets, the more you need to filter — and in the thick of a heatwave, well beyond the rule, sometimes continuously. The filtration time guide (“See also”) details its nuances.

Sanitiser consumption. Hot water demands more frequent corrections and tighter testing. What holds for a week at 24 °C can run out in two days at 32 °C.

When to winterise (and reopen). The ~12 °C threshold is the frontier of aquatic life: above it, things work; below it, they sleep. You winterise below this threshold, you reopen before crossing back over it — otherwise the race against the algae starts without you.

Watching it without thinking about it

Good news: temperature is the easiest parameter to track, because there’s nothing to dose — just to observe and anticipate.
